About Avian Studios
While working on new methods of teaching, Dr. Echols wanted to develop tools using video. At the time the goal was simple, to provide clear step-by-step video instruction of various procedures commonly used in bird veterinary practice. After countless hours of compiling video and editing, Dr. Echols created dozens of instructional videos that have been presented at conferences in the US and abroad. As a result of this work, Dr. Echols teamed up with Teton New Media to provide a 3 part series on commonly performed procedures in avian medicine. Since then, Dr. Echols has also worked with Zoological Education Network to produce 'Captive Foraging' a video designed to help owners use foraging to modify behavior in pet birds.
So are more videos in the works - you bet! Avian Studios is currently working on a large scale video series on Pet Bird Care. The first of the series of videos is scheduled to be released in the winter of 2009-2010. Watch for details!

Captive Foraging
This innovative DVD is destined to change the way caretakers view their captive birds. Based on the model of the natural foraging instinct of all animals, author and videographer Dr. Scott Echols introduces the concept of including a foraging tree in a bird's enclosure for environmental enrichment. The video describes how a foraging tree can potentially reduce the incidence of unwanted behaviors in captive birds. Also included are step-by-step directions on how to use a foraging tree as well as safe foraging toys for birds. The separate Special Features section details scientific information about the bird species included in the program and author's commentary on the video. Topics covered include understanding the natural foraging instinct of all animals; preventing unwanted behaviors, such as feather destruction and repetitive functionless activity; designing a foraging tree for captive birds; and creating foraging toys — from basic to advanced — to keep birds occupied and happy. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to qualified avian research projects selected by the author. This video is available through the Zoological Education Network.
